There was a 30 minute question and answer session held. The minutes of this session are too lengthy for publication in our newsletter but are posted at the HOA office if you wish to read them. At 12:30 PM Gerald Higgins announced the results of the recall voting to the homeowners in attendance. One hundred and forty-nine ballots (149) were necessary to establish a quorum. Three hundred and ninety-four ballots (394) were received, of which three hundred and eighty-one (381)were valid. Thirteen were quashed for lack of proper signature. Edie Cozzi received two hundred and seventy-seven (277) yes votes in favor of recall and one hundred and two no votes (102) opposed. Sandy Barger received two hundred and fifty-one (251) yes votes in favor of recall and one hundred and twenty-eight (128) no votes opposed. Gerald Higgins announced a majority of votes submitted were in favor of recall for both Directors and therefore they were recalled. He then informed the audience that for the replacement ballots, twenty-seven (27) names had been submitted. Ken Krupp received two hundred and ten (210) votes and will be replacing Sandy Barger's remaining term of two years and four months. Molly Tekel received one hundred and sixty-five (165) votes and will be replacing Edie Cozzi's term of four months. An election will be held in November, 2010 regarding the latter Board position. The meeting was adjourned at 12:35 PM. ************************************************************************************************** LIBRARY Our Springfield lending library is in need of children's books to enlighten and entertain our visiting grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The First Ever - Springfield Chili Challenge A Judged Event Coming in Late Fall There are at least 5 year-round resident CHILI aficionados ready to put their recipes to the Taste Test. But it would not be a true championship without competition from our seasonal neighbors up North. The event is planned soon after Fall weather sets in, when chili can really be appreciated. The 90 to 100 degree weather has prompted the return of the Friday Night Pool Party. Be cool in the Springfield Pool! ************************************************************************************************** Springfield Sound Director Search The Springfield Sound is a Chorus of 35 to 40 residents of Springfield and Sun Lakes. We perform two concerts annually, a Christmas Concert and a Spring Concert. We rehearse on Tuesday evenings each week beginning on October 26, 2010, in the SanTan Ballroom. We had been searching for a new Director and are proud to announce that we have obtained the services of Lana Oyer of Sun Lakes to serve as Director this year. She comes to us as a volunteer, with many years of experience directing the Jewish Community Choir, and she sings with the Phoenix Symphony as well. We look forward to her talents and abilities. We always are looking for singers. If you enjoy singing or would like to join us again, we will welcome you to join the fun and song beginning October 26. As always we look forward to returning chorus members. If interested, please contact Fred Massengale. ************************************************************************************************** Blankie Ladies The Blankie Ladies are making 250 stockings this year! They are asking for donations of Christmas fabrics and trims (such as rick-rack etc.) to help them meet their stocking goal. The sleigh for donations will be at the Recreation Center beginning in August. Just as in past years, they are requesting donations of small toys such as bubbles, crayons, coloring books, small cars, books, play-dough, small games and cards to help fill the stockings. They can also use items like kid-friendly toothbrushes and barrettes. If you are uncertain whether something is appropriate you can give Marge Durand a call. This project has been one of the most popular ones in Springfield. We always come together to support this group of ladies in their efforts to make the holidays special for as many children as they possibly can. Submitted by Marge Durand ********************************************************************************* A Special Thank You As always, we would like to thank our previous Board of Directors volunteers Edie Cozzi and Sandy Barger for their service to our neighborhood. The giving of your time and energy to help the Springfield Community is appreciated. ********************************************************************************* Tuesday Afternoon Bible Study New Class Will Begin in Late September The study book for fall is Christ in the Psalms, a fourteen-week study. The cost of the guidebook is $7.00. Our Bible Study group meets Tuesdays, at 2:00 p.m., in the Desert Star Room in the Recreation Center. Below is an excerpt from the first lesson of Christ in the Psalms: "Wherever you turn in the Bible you will find Christ. He is there in parable, in person, in example, in symbol and in name. Christ is definitely in the Psalms. This is most evident in the Messianic Psalms which refer to the Messiah, the Hebrew word for Christ." The Stonecroft Bible study is written in conversational style that encourages group discussion. If you are interested in joining our study, please call Bev Kleinhans. I will order the books in August. I need to know who will be in the class to have an appropriate number of books available. ********************************************************************************* Event Planned for Honoring Mothers and Grandmothers of Those Serving in the Military Do you have a child or grandchild serving in the military? The group also offers memorial luncheons for the convenience of families of residents who have passed away. Anyone wishing to set up an August memorial luncheon is asked to please call Roberta Hellman at 802-7321. The Sunshine Committee also sends greeting cards to those who may be ill, or have need of a little "sunshine". If you know of a Springfield resident who you feel should receive a card, please contact Roberta Hellman at the above phone number. August medical lending closet volunteers are: Darlene Clifton and Muriel Wenthe. Please contact one of them if you would like to borrow an item from the closet. Questions or comments regarding the Sunshine Committee may be directed to either Roberta Hellman or Diane Newman. There will be no committee meeting scheduled in July and August. Submitted by the Sunshine Committee ********************************************************************************* Community Helpers The Chandler Fire Department has a Senior Volunteer Group who will help change the batteries in your smoke alarms or install new smoke alarms if appropriate. There are some yellow postcards available in the round-a-bout up at the HOA Community Center. You can fill one of these out and mail it or you can give them a call at 482-2120. You will usually be asked to leave a voice mail. Please give them plenty of time to return your call as they volunteer one or two days a week. We already have some Springfield residents who availed themselves of this service with very positive results. ********************************************************************************* An Open Letter to Springfield Residents about Bingo Tickets Bingo is a fun and popular activity in our community. As workers for this event, members of the Bingo Committee are happy to see our friends and neighbors support this activity by buying tickets and attending the Bingo sessions. Some Springfield folks who don't attend any other events enjoy Bingo sessions as often as they are offered. Some of the community members who attend these sessions are single and purchase the two tickets allowed to each household and bring a guest (relative or friend) with them. Occasionally, one of the guests wins one of the Bingo pots. Of course, the Bingo Committee has no control over the winning cards during any session. The numbers are randomly produced by our Bingo machine. The Bingo Committee has done everything in its power to limit participation in the Bingo sessions to Springfield residents. The guests and/or residents are well within their rights to receive the payout for any game won by virtue of having a ticket to gain admission to the session. They have paid their money and taken the same chance as everyone else who buys a ticket. However, during our sellout season, November through April, each ticket purchased for use by a non-resident denies a resident the opportunity to enjoy the event. The rules developed by the Bingo Committee limiting the number of tickets each household is allowed to purchase were conceived to provide the maximum number of Springfield residents the opportunity to enjoy this event. Our seating capacity for each Bingo session is limited to 152, the maximum number of seats available in our ballroom when tables and chairs are used The Bingo Committee recommends that no resident purchase tickets for another resident. The Bingo Committee will assist a resident who has tickets and will not be able to attend the session. We often have a list of residents who were unable to buy tickets and would like to attend the Bingo session. If use of tickets by non-residents becomes an issue that the Bingo Committee is forced to deal with, we foresee only two options to resolve the matter. One option would be to require a person presenting a Bingo ticket upon entry to a Bingo session to also display either a Springfield ID or a valid guest pass. If neither of these forms of ID is present, then the person could be denied entry to the Bingo session. This option could lead to some very distasteful confrontations between the Bingo Committee and someone trying to enter a Bingo session without acceptable ID. We, of the Bingo Committee, are not willing to place ourselves in a situation where entry is denied to a ticket holder. The other option is to discontinue the Bingo sessions altogether. The Bingo Committee does not want to discontinue the Bingo sessions. It is a very popular event and is a source of enjoyment to Springfield residents. If anyone can come up with an acceptable solution to this matter, please make your solution known to the Bingo Committee. Members of the Bingo Committee can be identified by the blue polo shirts they wear during the Bingo sessions.
