Thank You Notes

Anne & I want to thank our Springfield friends for their support and encouragement during my recovery from lumbar back surgery this summer. I am now past the 2 month mark in my rehabilitation physical therapy programs and on track to participate in favorite cool weather activities such as our Tuesday Hikes and Thursday Couples Golf.

Ron and I would like to thank our wonderful kids, grandkids, great-grandkids and our great friends and neighbors for coming to Ron's 80th birthday party. We hope you all had a good time and had plenty of food and drink. We appreciate your thoughtfulness and your taking time to come and celebrate with us. Also we'd like to thank the office staff for their help in preparing for the party.
Ron & Donna Rowe

A big thank you to my friends and neighbors in Springfield for all of the cards, calls, food, prayers and rides that made my life so much easier. Just how wonderful is this community? Twice is enough for any surgery and you were there for me through both of them. This note can never tell you how much you really are appreciated.
Cara Hickey

I offer a sincere thank you to my friends and neighbors in Springfield for their expressions of sympathy in the loss of my mother, older sister. Your thoughts, prayers, cards and phone calls have brought me great comfort.
I would like to give a special thank you to Lloyd and Linda Fisk and Bud and Dottie Anderson for taking good care of our home, plants, mail and everything else while we were gone.

Candidate Statements

(Alphabetical Order)(Candidate statements have not been altered except for spacing .)

John Della Chiesa
I am interested in a position on the Board of Directors. As a homeowner I will work for the benefit of the Community as well as for the homeowners.
My experience as Inventory Control Manager for Estee Lauder Cosmetics and VP Operations Manager for Morgan Stanley/Dean Witter, would give Springfield Home Owners someone whom they can rely upon for major decision making that would be in the best interest of the Community as well as homeowners.
Ten year's experience as Inventory Control Manager for Estee Lauder Cosmetics in Brooklyn, NY. I was responsible for maintaining inventory Control on all aspects of items in the warehouse.
Operations Manager, Morgan Stanley/Dean Witter for sixteen years. As a key member of the operations management team I was a participant in strategic decision - making meetings working closely with Depository Trust Company and prime brokers to improve accuracy and productivity of transfer operations. Directed a team of ten operations staff in processing a high volume of securities transfers. Achieved 95% accuracy on transfers, attaining all production goals and enhancing client business relationships.
Advised branch managers and sales assistants on legal requirements of transfers. Corresponded with attorneys to resolve transfer concerns. Pioneered a new visual presentation of portfolios, which resulted in substantial increases in portfolio requests and the generation of increased proceeds for the firm.

Joe Katrein
As a former business owner and City Commissioner, I know in order to be an effective member of a functioning governing body requires effort to learn about the needs of the organization. As I will be completing my year as one of your Board Members, I have been through a round of contract negotiations; attended Home Owners Association workshop meetings sponsored by the city of Chandler, and participated in many other activities. This allows me to be a better Board member representing the needs of the Springfield Community. There is still much work to be accomplished to make our Home Owners Association function in the best way possible.
Since the money to operate our Home Owners Association comes from each of the 742 members in the form of (twice a year assessment) dues, it is essential to spend our money carefully and wisely. Our community is now about 15 years old and in this economy we must preserve the quality of our investment with proper upkeep and maintenance to prevent any deterioration of our facilities.
My wife Carol and I have lived here as full time residents since 2008 and enjoy the amenities that Springfield has to offer. We are also both very aware of the time commitment that continuing to be on the Springfield Board of Directors requires if one is to be an effective and fully functioning member of this, yet we are willing and able to make this commitment.
I ask for your vote to spend more time representing you and your needs as we all work to protect our investment in this community.

Jaana Ponzio
I was born in Finland and raised in Sweden. I speak three languages and read seven. I started my professional career in Retail and subsequently was employed by a Financial Institution, and then I work in the Petroleum Industry and then my work in the Avialtion brought me to Phoenix in 1997 and to Springfield. I have been a First Lady of Rotary International and I am a Paul Harris Fellow. I have also been Vice-President of PAA and APA.
My husband and I have lived in three different HOA communities, in California, Arizona and Mexico. I am very familiar with CC&R's. I am currently serving a second term as a Board of Director at Las Palmas Resort in Rocky Point. Our Springfield CC&R's are almost identical to their CC&R's of our home at Las Palmas. My experience serving as a Board of Director for Las Palmas has taught me that we must work as a team on the Board and represent the Community as a whole and not just special interest groups.
I have a strong back ground understanding the financial aspect of a HOA and also have experience in strong customer service. As a volunteer of a HOA we must treat our neighbors as share holders of a Corporation and also as valued customers of our Corporation. Team work is the only way to succeed. We have all invested in our wonderful Springfield Community and we need to keep our investments safe and sound.
It is time for a strong team to represent all our share holders in our Community..
I am asking for your Vote and support so we can move forward with a successful Board of Directors for 2012.

Summer is upon us, which means garage doors are open. Please remember they may be open 12 inches only, no higher. We appreciate everyone's cooperation.

Problem Solving in Springfield

A community member gave me an editorial article from the Saturday, July 23rd "Arizona Republic" newspaper. It made them think about of the problems in our community and how we handle them. The subject matter was "Building Community in Arizona."
The article begins with, "There's no shortage of talkers. Or shouters. There's no lack of people who grumble about what's wrong.
There are far fewer people who try to identify what's behind the nagging discontent that makes people complain that something's just not right. There are fewer still who set about to methodically do something to change it."
(The article continues from there to describe what the Center for the Future of Arizona has done for Arizona.)

Springfield is no different from many communities and certainly has its share of shouters as evidenced by many of our HOA Board meetings through the years. We also have people using social mediums such as letters and e-mail to create rumors and criticize others without the courtesy of coming to the person they wish to criticize.
What is behind our discontent and why do small minorities of people seem to feel that they have the right to leave polite discourse behind them when they wish to voice a complaint? Some residents have decided that the only way to get something done is to get angry and then be rude and act like a bully either in writing or out loud.
It is important to realize that we are all in the same Springfield boat and the kinder we are to each other the better we can resolve our issues.
It is also important to use perspective when considering an issue. Is it "of the moment" or will it be important in five years? Is it really worth your anger?
And is anger the best way to deal with it?
Anger is hardly ever the best way to deal with our any issue and at our age, we should have already learned this. In Sunday School or kindergarten, we learned to treat others as we wish to be treated. Perhaps we need to go back to kindergarten and relearn this.
We are such a loving and giving community 90% of the time. Let's move towards an even higher percent.

Get Fit-Stay Fit

The Get Fit-Stay Fit Committee is planning for the next season of activity. You will be able to order shirts at the Pancake Breakfast in September.
The new shirts will be navy blue with a yellow logo. They are the same quality as the previous year. The price is $9.00. This is a little more than last year as the price of cotton and shipping has risen. The shirts will be available to order in small, medium, large, x-large and xx-large. The xx-large are $10.00.
The committee is planning to order the shirts as soon as there are enough orders. They want to have the first order of shirts here by the end of October. Questions? Call Dorothy MacDonald or Pat Boone.

SUMMER SUPER SATURDAY FUN NIGHT

The Fun Night on August 6th lived up to its name, as a group of residents and their guests enjoyed DJs Barry & Artie. They sang some favorite oldies, and also provided plenty of music, including line dances and group dances, so the dance floor was always full. There was even a game of musical chairs.
The Social Committee would like to thank Marvin Schulte for contacting local businesses to obtain the door prizes that were given away at this event. We would request that the prize winners use their gift certificates soon or pass on to someone else to use soon. Please patronize these businesses who provided the door prizes, and let them know that you are from Springfield:

MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY

This year, Make a Difference Day will be Saturday, October 22. Please think about how we could participate to make a difference in our part of the world. Maybe we could spend the day helping our own residents or refreshing our community assets. As an alternative, we could do some volunteer work, perhaps partnering with a church or charitable organization. You may go to their website www.makeadifferenceday.com to read about how others have celebrated this day. Ideas will be discussed at the next Social Committee meeting on September 1, so come prepared to present your suggestions.

DIAMONDBACKS GAME BUS TRIP

The bus trip will be Saturday, September 10, for the baseball game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres. This is 2001 World Championship Reunion Weekend, so you are encouraged to wear the team colors from 2001: turquoise, purple, copper, and black.
We will meet in the Recreation Center parking lot at 3:00 pm to distribute the actual game tickets and food/drink coupons, and then board the bus. The bus will leave promptly at 3:30 pm, or earlier if everyone is there. (Please note time change.) By leaving this early, we should arrive at the stadium in time for everyone to receive a replica ring, get food and drinks, and settle in to watch the pre-game show. Our tickets are in section 140, near the bullpen on the left field side, so bring your glove to catch a home run ball. You may also want to bring a seating pad or stadium seat. The game begins at 5:10 pm.
The first 25,000 attendees through the gates will receive a replica of the 2001 World Series Championship ring with the Diamondbacks insignia - it's a beauty. Also, there will be a pre-game reunion ceremony of the Diamondbacks players who were on the team who won the 2001 World Series, including Jay Bell, David Dellucci, Steve Finley, Luis Gonzalez, Mark Grace, Damian Miller, Chad Moeller, Armando Reynoso, Reggie Sanders, Junior Spivey, Greg Swindell, Matt Williams, Tony Womack, and manager Bob Brenly.
The $33 ticket price covers a ticket to the game, a hot dog, a soda, a coupon for a soda, bus ride, parking, and tip for the bus driver. For additional information, please call MaryAnn Schulte.

APPRECIATION OF OUR VOLUNTEERS

Our wonderful volunteers help to make Springfield such a great place to live.
Volunteers include the residents who work at the front desk, the Board of Directors, members of the Board Committees, members of the various sub-committees, and even residents who see a job that needs to be done and then do it. These volunteers work behind the scenes to keep our community running smoothly, even in some ways you may not even notice.
There are so many functions that our volunteers do: making decisions about investing and using HOA funds; reviewing and approving ARC requests; preparing and distributing the newsletters; planning special social events like dances and shows; organizing tennis and golf tournaments; leading the bible study group; maintaining the library; assisting other residents in how to use fitness equipment; selecting and showing movies in the theater; running the bingo games; rehearsing songs for the Springfield Sound concert; helping Anna and Diane in the office; working in the kitchen to prepare and serve memorial luncheons, pancake breakfasts, and holiday dinners; and also various other activities. Many residents even serve in multiple ways. Wow!
Other HOAs have paid positions for Activities Director, Fitness Center Director, office workers, and kitchen staff. If Springfield had to pay employees to do these jobs, our HOA dues would be considerably higher.
These volunteers work without pay, and sometimes without acknowledgement for what they do. They deserve our gratitude and respect, even if you may not agree with them. Be sure to say "thanks" the next time you see a volunteer. They need to hear words of appreciation, not just complaints.
So, here's a big THANK YOU to each and every Springfield volunteer!
