Thank You

Dear Friends,

Bob and I want to thank all of our neighbors and friends here in Springfield who sent food, cards, called, or dropped by to see me during the past two months after both of my surgeries. The first surgery was to insert a titanium rod in my right femur, and the later surgery was to repair a torn cartilage and cyst in my right knee. I am still using a walker but hopefully that won't be much longer. Your continued prayers for my recovery are very much appreciated. Thank you again.

Bobbie Hubbard

50 Years and Counting!

Roger and Judy Cornell will be observing their 50th Wedding Anniversary on March 10th. They have been favored with 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. We have been blessed beyond measure through these years with wonderful family and friends. Our lives have been enriched with warm lasting memories.

Thank You

The family of Marilyn Stratton would like to thank our friends and neighbors here in Springfield for their kind attention after her sudden passing. The memorial luncheon by the Sunshine Committee was a beautiful event! The gathering represented her best memories of living in Springfield and we feel blessed for spending the past 10 years together with her and with you in this special community.

Ken Stratton, her husband
Jerry & Kay Suydam, her brother and sister-in-law
Marnie & John Newman, her sister and brother-in-law

Gate Control Remotes

The Board of Directors at the recommendation of the Facilities & Finance Committee has recently purchased a new control system and software for the Riggs and the McQueen gates. The system will include new Keypads and Remote Controls. The system will be installed sometime in mid to late February. Unfortunately, the remote controls which you currently have are not compatible with the new system. As soon as the software arrives it will be entered into our computer and be in place prior to installation of the new keypads, etc. The BOD has ordered one new remote for each household at no charge to resident. Additional remotes can be purchased for $25.00 each as needed. Please watch Bulletin Boards in the lobby and at the Riggs and McQueen gates for availability of the new remotes. When they have been programmed, notification will be posted so that you can pick them up at the HOA office and have them in your car at the time the new system is initialized.
Thank you in advance for a smooth transition.

SUNSHINE COMMITTEE ACTIVITIES

The Springfield Sunshine Committee thanks the dedicated volunteers who step forward to staff the lending closet, serve memorial luncheons, and maintain a list of useful items available to residents when young families visit. You too, can be a part of this group, and your participation would be greatly appreciated. Our next meeting is March 1 at 11 a.m. in the Desert Star room in the clubhouse, and all are welcome. Why not check us out?
The March lending closet volunteers are: Dorothy Kleist, 883-0789 and Betty Melton, 802-5618. Please contact either of them if you have need of such items as wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, commodes, shower stools, canes, etc. These items are available at no charge. They are sanitized after each use, for the comfort and safety of the next user. Items may be borrowed for up to three months. Please return borrowed equipment to the volunteer listed on the door of the closet, located in the workout building adjacent to the clubhouse.
If you are interested in scheduling a memorial luncheon following the passing of a Springfield resident, please contact Roberta Hellman to make arrangements. Please don't attempt to schedule these events through the office. These luncheons are gladly provided free of charge; however, donations are appreciated to defray costs.
Grandma's Closet is a new Sunshine Committee enterprise. We are starting a list of items useful to residents when young families visit. This list serves as a cross reference of such equipment as highchairs, toys, trikes, cribs, etc. Mary Ann Schulte is coordinating this program, and maintains the list. Please contact her if you have items you are willing to share, or if you would like to borrow equipment. Space limitations make it impossible for the committee to store these items, but we can tell you who has one that might be available.
Please don't forget to consider becoming a part of the Sunshine Committee.

Springfield Medical Lending Closet

As most of you know, the Sunshine Committee has medical equipment that can be loaned out for a period of 3 months. There are 2 volunteers each month to help with the lending out and returning of the equipment. Their names are listed in the newsletter, across from the theater, on the lending closet door and at the front desk. If you need to borrow or return any medical equipment please call only those ladies for that month and they will schedule a time convenient for the both of you to meet at the "closet" which is in the exercise building. If you know that you're going to be needing any of our items, it is best not to wait till the last minute since our volunteers might not be able to get it for you immediately.

Prickly Patchers

Friday, March 11 Class: 9:00 a.m. in the Springfield Ballroom.
You will learn:
a. how to do Celtic Knot without tracing a pattern onto the background fabric and
b. how to make your own bias tape.
You may machine sew the bias tape down using a zig-zag stitch or blind hem stitch or you may hand stitch the edges of the bias tape down using a blind stitch.

Celtic Knot-Supply List:

16 x 16 inch square of white, cream, or beige fabric for background. I used quilt backing fabric because the weave is not as tight as it is with regular cotton quilt fabric. (We will have to be able to see the pattern through the fabric.)
1/2 yard of darker cotton fabric (any color) for bias strips and borders
10 x10 inches of contrasting cotton fabric for positioning inside loops of knots
Roxanne's Glue Baste It- 2 oz. bottle
masking tape
Clover 1/4 inch bias tape maker
sewing machine
If you have a sheet of clear plastic or piece of glass 16 x 16 inches or larger please bring it. Also needed is a small ironing board and an iron.
We will need lamp bases about 19 or more inches tall with a light bulb.
We will be using the last two items to make a light box to enable us to see the pattern through the light colored fabric.
Bring thread to match the darker fabric or clear monofilament thread, fabric scissors, rotary cutter, mat, ruler.
You will be able to use your completed square to make a small wall hanging or a pillow cover.

SUCCESSFUL GARAGE SALE!

The Springfield community-wide garage sale held on February 5 was a huge success. 72 residents opted to open up their garages and driveways to the public, who poured into our community beginning at 8:00 a.m., freely spending their dollars until a little past noon. In addition to those 72, several of their neighbors added items to those already in the garage/driveways, bringing the total resident participation to at least 90. Many residents with larger, more expensive items took in close to or over a thousand dollars each, while others sold items to bring in a hundred or so. Some benefits, beyond cleaning out unwanted items and making money, were the camaraderie of neighbors walking throughout Springfield and stopping to visit or shop along the way, as well as showing off our community to outsiders and listening to their glowing comments about our community. The golf course grill also had a very large crowd for lunch. The Social/Garage Sale committee extends their thanks to all the volunteers and participants. They have recommended to the Board that this event be allowed to take place annually. The advanced planning and organization really paid off!
